| Southern Eleven Cuisine: American, Modern, Steakhouse |
The story of Southern 11 is about more than just man and meat. It begins in a generic, cheap hotel in Yorkshire. There is a young man in the hotel, wondering how he got there. The man, James Hitchen, reflects on another eighty hour week spent working like a dog for someone else. Briefly deflated by his musings, James considers the prospect of working like a dog for himself, and Southern 11 is born…
After spotting a helluva gap in the UK for quality, authentic American ‘soul food’ James voyages to Tennessee, eating at BBQ shacks like Jack’s and Corky’s. Here, where hygiene and presentation come second to taste and comfort, James experiences the Real Deal. Acquiring a second to none knowledge of this delicious discovery would involve a bit of down ‘n’ dirty, so James moves to Tennessee where he learns off a Pitt Boss how to produce mouth wateringly good BBQ food…
Back in the UK, James knows that to give Southern 11 legs he needs the right people to make it happen. In comes Jackie, captain of the only British team ever to win the Jack Daniels Cook Off, to supply the Oklahoman smokers that make the meat melt in the mouth. In comes his partner Karina, soon converted from Vegetarianism and a future creative director. to help nurture the concept and make it thrive in comes James’s brother, Guy, to provide the support needed as the business grows and develops…
It is from here where the story of Southern 11 has yet to be told. S11 BBQ is simple food made fresh, by passionate people, with a healthy dose of Southern comfort and soul. From solitary beginnings in a Yorkshire hotel room, the S11 vision is now a flavoursome reality for satisfied diners and friends.

Really impressed! The food was delicious and was something a little different from the norm. We will be returning to work our way through the rest of the menu.

Popped in the other day after a spot of shopping and needed to have some lunch. I was expecting the usual burger and chips lunch we often get when visiting the Spinningfields chains - how wrong could I be.
We were hugely impressed by decor, service and food! Very stylish with big wooden tables, sleek bar and big doors and windows. Our waiter was magnificent and helped explain what came with what!
I ordered the lil’ burgers whilst my friend had the ribs. Because the menu looked so good we also ordered some nachos and the biggest olives I have ever seen. All of it was amazing, all of it!
My burgers which were juicy and incredibly tasty came with a cone of fries with truffle salt and parmesan sprinkles – insanely good! I tried one of the ribs and then understood why my friend was mad; they were delicious. The thick sauce came with a brush for extra sauce(!) and was excellent. Thick, gooey, smoky and something I will certainly try next time I am there!
The nachos were how nachos should be, each coated in a Red Leicester cheese (I think), sour cream, salsa and the best guacamole I have ever had – this was different to others and had a strong lime taste which worked incredibly well with the truffle/parmesan fries!
This restaurant has a lot to offer, not only the food but great cocktails (I had to shake mine!) and cracking desserts too. I will certainly be back to try one of their specials which had ran out – always a good sign!!

Visited on Friday afternoon for some after work drinks and a bite to eat. This was my first time at Southern Eleven and having seen it on here I thought I'd give it a try. Great service, great beer and some really good food. Tried some deep fried pickled spears which were amazing with a spicy mayo, and then some pulled pork that was fantastic! The waiter told us that there were cocktails on offer which came with amuse bouches and all sorts - something we'll definitely try next time! Can't wait to try the rest of the menu!!

We visited here on Tuesday evening to sample some of the fine new specials that Southern Eleven are running to celebrate the soulful cuisine of the eleven Southern states of America – which is the basis of the restaurant’s ethos.
Having not been here before, I asked around to see what people thought. All signs were pointing to great wholesome food with an attitude and Southern Eleven certainly didn't disappoint in living up to their reputation.
First of all, S11 is situated in the business world of Spinningfields; an area full of offices, gyms and chain restaurants. Therefore this authentic independent American restaurant is a welcome break with character, real atmosphere, fine service and great food without the clinical approach many of the high street names stick with.
Because we were trying many dishes, we ended up with them all strewed across the long wooden table. A great view bursting with colour, terrific smells and happy people!
Instead of meticulously critiquing all the dishes, I have instead taken lots of photos – after all, we all eat with our eyes. If you click here (http://tinyurl.com/melsmeals) you can see what I mean.
In short, if you want a meal that will taste incredible at a reasonable price in a lovely setting, Southern Eleven is for you. If you are busy in work, want lunch but haven’t time to nip to the shops, Southern Eleven is for you. If you want a change from the chain restaurants close to work, Southern Eleven is for you. If you want a cheeky cocktail with a twist, Southern Eleven is for you. If you like good food, well......you get the idea.
