I was introduced to The Pointing Dog shortly after I moved to the area. It was summer and we sat outside in the sunshine enjoying very nice food. I have been back 5 times since then and and have introduced other friends to the pub, which I would only do if I felt that the pub was very good. I have enjoyed the same excellent standard of food every time and the customer service has also been very good every time - now that is quite difficult to pull off as all too often standards slip, but not here apparently (not so far anyway).
Some favourite dishes include the dressed crab and the chile squid taco (both starters).

I have been back to the PD a number of times since my first review and have always had excellent food and serivce. So we decdied to go there for NYE. The set price of £49 per head was so worth it, 3 delicious courses, I had the pate which was rustic and tasty then duck which melted in your mouth, followed by the lightest ginger cake. The choice of wine was excellent, and there seems to be a wine for everyone taste The live jazz band were fantastic and played most of the evening but you were still able to chat with fellow guests. Midnight brought loud cheers and fireworks in the outside garden area. After dining had finished the band volume went up a notch and they had most people up dancing by the end of the evening. Everyone in my party enjoyed their evening.

I have been to the PD on many occasions and have never been disappointed! At first glance the menu looks pricey however you get what you pay for in quality and quantity! Very impressed with both the waiting and bar staff on their efficiency and enthusiasm for their job ! Everything from their large array of cocktails to deserts and everything in between is extremely tasty and well cooked! I will continue to sing its praises and dine/drink there !

I have been a regular visitor to the Pointing Dog since it opened, The food is generally of a very good standard, if a little pricey. The menu could do with refreshing on a more regular basis or perhaps expanding a little to give the regular customer a bit of verity. Service is of a reasonable standard, however, the is one bright light a very bubbly waitress called Becks has taken the trouble to get to know her regulars and you are always greeted by name. She is very knowladgeable on the wine list and the menu and has made several recommendations that I have enjoyed. There is nothing like being greeted with a warm friendly smile. I am a regular and will be back soon. They just need to work a bit on the menu.

A great experience, lovely food, gorgeous wine overlooking the gardens on a cold but sunny day, what else do you need!
We wanted somewhere different and think we found it. Really nice place and really happy that it was easy to park at. A nice reception on entering and escorted to a table overlooking the gardens and the food really scored well. Chicken and ham pie and an amazing steak with fat chips but we were too full for a dessert each so shared the chocolate pudding, yum! I need the recipe!

We wanted to try it out as we'd heard a lot about their pies, so went down at the weekend to check it out. Ended up ordering the fish and chips as I saw someone else order it and it was mammoth. I loved every mouthful and left nothing on the plate; maybe it was the beer batter or the few pints of Dunham I had with it, but good hearty grub and lots of it, totally stuffed, although I still had eyes for the pie the next table.
Top grub & smooth beer, what better a combination?

My sisters and I visited the Pointing Dog as it was a special family get together and I can honestly say that it was one of the best nights we have all had. The food was impeccable and the service was second to none. If you want fantastic food, great atmosphere and a memorable evening go to the Pointing Dog!! I can't specifically recommend a dish as they were all delicious. A truly wonderful evening!!!

First class, thanks Mel @ onionring for the recommend. The food at Pointing Dog is spot on, I thought the menu was inventive without being pretentious and had some classics dishes with a twist as well. They catered for my gluten and dairy intolerances too - fabulous! The service was great, really attentive and genuinely helpful.

Fantastic makeover of the old smithy. Good menu and love the clear approach about well behaved children welcome before 8pm. Recommend the lobster, lamb shank shepherds pie, sunday roasts and the bread & butter with marmalade ice cream (yes, really!) so far. Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff.
Getting the bill has been a little slow but the place has been very busy at peak times. There is some minor building stuff needs finishing like the ceiling in the ladies loo and the downspout for the smoking shelter gutter - sorry I do notice detail!
