In December 2008, Hoi Polloi Pub Co acquired the Horse & Jockey, a landmark pub in the South Manchester suburb of Chorlton, with a simple plan: to transform a much-loved but tired boozer into what Chorlton was crying out for - a family-friendly, female-friendly 'local place for local people' with great food, great beer, great wine and a relaxed, laid-back-almost-horizontal atmosphere. In other words, a pub for the noughties.

The Horse & Jockey couldn't be in safer hands. This is a long-term project for Peter Dalton, director of Hoi Polloi. Although no longer a 20-something party animal, the last thing he wanted to do with 'The Jockey' was to apply a corporate make-over and create a pretentious over-priced gastropub (we hate that word!) or a bland, soulless space. Whether it's an exhibition by a local artist on the walls, the book club monthly meeting in the corner, or simply a bunch of regulars catching up for the day, it's the local community that makes a great pub, and it's on them that we focus our efforts.

Our philosophy is simple - all food served at The Jockey is:
  • Locally sourced
  • Seasonal
  • Freshly cooked
  • Reasonably priced but not undersold (with the same policy applied to drinks prices)

The relaxed nature of the operation is reflected in the menu - true classics rather than pretentious, over-complicated dishes. Simple food, done well. Menus are short(ish), with specials on offer and a good selection for vegetarians and vegans. Many of our smaller dishes make great sharing plates for tapas-style dining.

Sunday wouldn't be Sunday without a traditional roast, and we aim to create the perfect unhurried atmosphere in which to eat it - relaxing music, Sunday papers, fresh coffee, attentive staff.

I went to the Jockey this weekend for lunch and had the potted ham hock which was delicious followed by the steak which frankly was melt in the mouth. Its been along time since I've stepped foot in the Jockey and the transformation is fantastic who ever has taken over the food side I recommend them. It was very busy also with the terrace packed so we sat in the restaurant which was lovely though the waiting staff could be a little more attentive but for a pub we left very happy - well worth a visit

Visited yesterday having been on a long walk and was pleased to find a busy pub with many different beers on draught (even had their own beer festival!). Had the fish and chips which was excellent. Will certainly come again, maybe when the Onionring offer is on in the week.
