Just had a great meal at the Packet. I had the steak and ale pie, fantastic, just fantastic! loads of good quality beef in tasty ale gravy with mash and veg, barely had room for rhubarb crumble and custard, what a bargain too. Lovely food and lovely people, will definitely be back again

My husband & I have eaten 3 times at the Old Packet House during the past month. The food is basic home cooked pub grub (no microwaved food here) & value for money is unbelievable. The menu is varied with just the right amount of choices. The staff are friendly & helpful & the dining area is comfortable & attractive. The plates were hot, which is an important detail, and one on which so many places fail. On our first visit I had an omelette & an extra filling was added free of charge. I was able to have a warm, crusty, white roll with my soup, instead of ciabatta or brown seeded bread (which is usually what is offered nowadays) genuine, from the pod, garden peas, and, best of all, traditional sherry trifle with (wonder of wonders) fruit at the bottom. We both agreed that this trifle was the best we could remember tasting, and was such a refreshing change from cheesecake, panna cotta & chocolate mousse. Our bill for 2 lagers, a glass of wine, 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 desserts & 2 cappuccions was an incredible £34.20. Desserts were £2.50 each & the coffees only £1.30. Last weekend we went for Sunday lunch & an extra jug of gravy was supplied to every table (a nice touch). This was only our third visit & I was amazed that the martini rosso I had requested on my first visit, which was not stocked, was now available. This is surely a gesture on a par with that of the Ritz or Savoy. I don't know anywhere else serving this quality of food for such value, so if you want a simple, home cooked, delicious pub meal, try the Old Packet House. You won't be disappointed.

Called in after walking the dog along the canal. Great atmosphere and a friendly welcome. Would recommend trying it if you haven't yet.
