Mel samples the dough

If you were planned on starting 2014 with a healthy diet of beetroot juice and Alpen along with a daily visit to an expensive gym, I dare say you are now like me; a poor planner yes, but a happy, full and slightly overweight Mancunian putting the resolution away for another year.

I've got a good excuse though. My ‘let’s have the entire menu’ ethos is because the food which filled my pre-desired 6 pack on Wednesday was bloody marvellous (a new personal best making it to January 8th by the way).

Having watched Dogs N Dough ply Twitter with their latest pizza special all week, I had enough and booked my table to devour the Greek which consisted of tangy feta cheese, red onion, sun-blushed tomatoes and punchy black olives.

They weren't wrong, this was special. Although looking a little straightforward in comparison to the usual outrageous specials (especially this week’s hot dog), it was simplicity at its best. We all love a Greek salad and we all love a pizza so it seemed obvious to combine the two to create this splendid meal.

As I was ravenous, we ordered some onion rings and dog bites to initiate the feast. I love these here because it’s rare you get an onion ring which is seasoned this well – it’s usually just a frozen job from Iceland. The dog bites were different from last time though, more dough balls than biscuits – not a bad thing of course, we all love dough balls! Couple these with some of their hot sauce choices and you’re onto a good thing.

The brains at Dogs N Dough also had some lovely beers in which I hadn't seen before from Hawaiian brewery Kona. We chose the Fire Rock pale ale and Longboard lager which each came in funky 1960s style bottles. Really tasty beers, and went extremely well with the pizzas – would love to try some more.

In order to balance everything we also ordered one of their popular pizzas, the Super Mario which was full of peppery beef, fresh green peppers and smoky BBQ sauce. Imagine eating a chilli with BBQ sauce on it, on a pizza. It was INCREDIBLE; the famous Italian plumber would be proud.

You can’t come to a place like this without having some kind of hot dog on the agenda, so opted for the Gluttony Fries; cheese on chips with slices of beef frank dotted around. If there is one thing you take from this waffled review, order these fries; they will change how you think fries should be served. You can even custom your pizza this way with hot dog and cheesy fries on your Greek...it was epic.

The one thing I am still yet to try is the dessert pizza. Call me old fashioned, but I simply can’t eat anymore after TWO starters, TWO pizzas and a portion of fries laced with hot dogs. One day I will do this, probably quite soon having seen one fly past me. Basically it is a chocolate sweet pizza topped with peanut M&Ms, white chocolate buttons and chocolate sauce.....you can see why it is annoying not to have this!!

One thing which is often overlooked is the atmosphere in a bar/restaurant. Whilst we were there, everyone (including the staff) seemed like they were genuinely enjoying themselves and having a great time (as I was). Combining a very reasonably priced menu, wonderful drinks (the cocktails were flying out), excellent blues music and first class service – you’d be hard pressed to fault any of it.

Dogs N Dough mentioned that they are working on some more specials – I can’t wait to try these, although I might jog there to balance out both my calorie count and I can also cancel my gym subscription then too.
