Europe’s best scientific minds seen at Grafene

King Street restaurant Grafene played host to the inventor of graphene, Professor Sir Andre Geim and 80 top EuroScience Open Forum delegates, marking the launch of the European convention for science and innovation.

The restaurant, which opened on July 22, is the latest city centre venture from Paul and Kathryn Roden, owners of the Losehill House Hotel & Spa in the Peak District. Named after the 2D “wonderstuff” material, its opening coincided with the biennial ESOF event, also held in Manchester this July.

The ESOF conference prides itself on bringing together over 4,500 leading thinkers, innovators, policy makers, journalists and educators from more than 90 countries, to discuss current and future breakthroughs in contemporary science.

Delegates experienced the 190-cover restaurant’s Modern British menu, which features eclectic dishes like pickled mackerel, with kohlrabi and chilled sorrel soup followed by Goosnargh guinea fowl served with heritage carrots and crispy potatoes.

The dinner was also attended by University of Manchester Vice Chancellor, Dame Nancy Rothwell and comedy producer John Lloyd, and the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas.

Grafene owner Paul Roden says: “Grafene is our culinary interpretation of this exciting new chapter in Manchester’s rich history, which has always been marked by scientific discovery and progress.

We were honoured to host the ESOF 2016 delegates here for dinner and it is extremely fitting for us to welcome Professor Sir Andre Geim as a guest of honour.

Not to mention the countless other delegates who are involved in shaping and developing the ever-changing scientific landscape of Manchester.”
