Mel joins the other five stuffed birds.....

Stunning Elizabethan hotel, Nunsmere Hall hosts a monthly Supper Club to showcase some of the best local produce on offer coupled with the excellent skills in their kitchen.

This month the club was focusing on an old classic; the five bird roast.

Similar to the hotel, the five bird roast also originates from Elizabethan times, and was prepared between courses by Andrew Vernon; the Master Butcher from The Hollies Farm Shop. At the end of the evening, this demonstration was raffled to raise £445 for the Hospitality Action.

With a selection of festive sausage canapés and mulled wine, Mel soon got into the Christmas spirit and excitement grew for the first turkey dinner of the year (along with 4 other meats!).

As you can see from the lovely (and well taken) photo on the right, the starter consisted of a selection of hors d’oeuvres. Plenty of tit-bits to devour and out of the lot, Mel particularly loved the quail scotch egg and chicken terrine – the salmon on rye was also delicious as was the Welsh rarebit; just not enough!

Having said that, there was a buzz in the air as all 135 of us were unsure what meat we were about to eat. Would it be all turkey? Bit of duck perhaps? Whatever we were about to have, there would be plenty of it as these roasts serve up to 150 people!

Mel was very lucky with hers, and the dish comprised of three of the five meats; turkey, duck and pheasant. Missing out on the chicken and partridge was a disappointment; however, there was plenty to keep Mel going along with the sprouts & pancetta, roast potatoes and delicious gravy.

After a nice wait to recover from this epic meat feast, Mel’s favourite course arrived – a dessert consisting of an apple tart with Christmas pudding ice-cream. It was glorious! Cinnamon, nutmeg, raisins, sweet apple; it was Christmas in a mouthful!

With obligatory freshly brewed coffee and mince pies to finish, the £30 per head was excellent value for money (even though Mel didn’t win the raffled bird).

With plenty of other events coming up in 2013 including mushroom hunts, polo dinners and many other supper club feasts, Nunsmere Hall is a venue Mel will be returning to time after time – might even stay over next time!
