Sunny Thinking designs limited edition 75th anniversary book for Soreen

Manchester creative marketing agency Sunny Thinking has produced a commemorative 75th anniversary coffee table book for Soreen. The limited edition publication tells the story of how the iconic malt loaf has grown into one of Britain’s most loved food brands, with a growing family of products.

The journey starts back in 1938 when John Sorenson, the founder, created the original recipe and goes right through to the present day. The book is written using a warm, friendly tone and uses original imagery and photographs that span seven decades to bring the story to life in a nostalgic celebration. It even includes an image of the actual little black recipe book that contains the original ingredients a recipe that is still top secret today.

Jonathan Reed, managing director of Sunny Thinking, said it’s a privilege to have such prestigious work in their portfolio. “Soreen is a favourite at home and in the office. It’s a brand we’ve all grown up with, so it was fascinating for the whole team to learn about how the little loaf has evolved to what it is today. We’ve enjoyed working with Soreen for the last two years, including designing their Union Jack Pack in 2012 as part of a Great British Summer of Soreen campaign. To research their history, put this together and get the chance to look back in detail at the different branding, packaging, partners and advertising Soreen has run over the years, was a dream come true.”

Lucy Ardern, assistant brand manager at Soreen said: “ We’re proud of our heritage and Sunny Thinking has produced a wonderful publication to help us commemorate our anniversary. It tells the story of ‘Soreen – 75 years in the baking’ and how we’ve grown from a family run business in the back streets of Manchester to an international brand in 2014. We are delighted with it.”

Sunny Thinking teamed up with Hale-based creative agency Scribble who supported the publication by bringing the story to life. Helen Dugdale, managing director of Scribble said: ‘We’ve collaborated with Sunny Thinking on many occasions, including the Soreen cookery book, and this project is a crystal clear example of how our warm and friendly words are a powerful mix with Sunny Thinking’s creative designs. At Scribble we relish the challenge of telling stories. The Soreen team provided some excellent research, which we then delved through to help tell the brand’s tale. Both the tone of copy and style of design is very ‘on-brand’ for Soreen and the bright yellow cover screams out read me now.”

Reed concludes: ‘In a fast-paced world that changes by the day, many consumers warm to a bit of nostalgia and Great British brands with a strong heritage. As an agency, we love them too. We love working with great North West brands like Soreen and Mornflake Cereals, one of our other clients who were recently recognised as one of the oldest family run businesses in the country.”
