New Head Chef Ken Calder joins The Angel Pub

The Angel is a traditional dining pub next to the NOMA development and on the edge of the Northern Quarter of Manchester City Centre. Its quirky and original interior, log fires, and original paintings by Yorkshire artist Kane Cunningham attract a diverse and bohemian clientele who enjoy the relaxed and informal atmosphere of the downstairs bar, and the candlelit upstairs dining room. The Angel also enjoys a musical tradition with frequent performances on its grand piano by classical pianist Peter Moore, and acoustic evenings featuring singer songwriters from Manchester and further afield.

Having won CAMRA’s North Manchester Real Ale Pub of the Year award in 2010 the Angel is now well established as a great place to enjoy cask ales from small independent breweries throughout the country, as well as a handpicked selection of good wines from France and Italy.

A menu of traditional pub classics (sometimes with a twist) featuring locally sourced home cooked food is served in the bar from 12 noon Monday to Saturday, and the owners are delighted to have been joined recently by head chef Ken Calder who is launching this Autumn’s a la carte menu in October.

The a la carte menu will be available from 6pm Monday to Saturday and includes dishes such as homemade ham hock terrine with Angel piccalilli; pan fried wild sea bass with chorizo and mussel broth, and chocolate torte with raspberry coulis and pistachio ice cream.

Ken is passionate about food, having worked alongside Gordon Ramsay at the Connaught Hotel in Mayfair and as head chef at award winning local restaurant Grenache. He also had the pleasure of cooking for Her Majesty the Queen earlier this year when she visited New Brighton during her Diamond Jubilee Tour, as one of a team selected by Claire Lara who won BBC’s Masterchef in 2010.

Each dish is skillfully prepared by Ken and his assistant Amelia Vella who won the Greater Manchester Heat of the 2012 North West Young Chef of the Year competition under Ken’s mentoring. Their combined experience and enthusiasm ensures that the kitchen delivers consistently delicious food at very reasonable prices, with main courses ranging from £12.00 to £19.00.

The new Autumn a la carte menu reflects the owners’ commitment to serving great tasting modern European food, and clients can look forward to the introduction of a traditional Sunday roast, and its much anticipated Christmas menu.

A private dining/meeting room for up to 14 guests and a car park are also available. For further information please visit www.theangelmanchester.com or email [email protected].

The Angel is a dining pub in the Northern Quarter of Manchester city centre. Under new management since September 2009 The Angel is now well established as a relaxed and informal place to enjoy great beers from small independent breweries as well as handpicked wines and freshly cooked locally sourced food.

At The Angel, we are not just a real ale pub but an outstanding Northern Quarter restaurant in our own right. Of course, we wouldn't be a Northern Quarter restaurant if we didn't serve a wide variety of sandwiches, lunches and light bites, so if you aren't looking for the haute cuisine experience we still have plenty to offer you, whatever your taste. And don't forget we've won awards for our real ale, too!

The downstairs bar is great for a drink at lunchtime or after work or an evening with friends with the emphasis on conversation and no television. Customers can choose to eat either in the bar or in the cosy upstairs restaurant which has a log fire and original paintings by local artist Kane Cunningham. The Angel is happy to consider showcasing the work of other local artists on request.

It would be an understatement to say we were delighted to receive CAMRA's North Manchester Real Ale Pub of the Year Award in 2010! It showed us that our hard work sourcing the best real ales around had been recognised by the very organisation which has done more than anyone to popularise real ale in the UK. Indeed they went so far as to describe the Angel as being like 'an old friend, reinvigorated and in safe-hands' - the pub had actually been empty for two years before our tenure began in 2008 so to reach that milestone within two years was a very proud moment!

So, what are our credentials that make us a proper Manchester real ale pub? We have two pumps for cider and perry, and up to eight pumps for our regular and guest ales. We have one perennially-featured real ale, 'White Lion' from Bob's Brewing Company (Bob's has received awards for best beer at several beer festivals), and we try to ensure that our guest ales are regularly refreshed to provide variety as well as quality.

There's no doubt we take our status as a Manchester real ale pub seriously. It goes without saying that many of our customers take their real ale seriously too. As for you, if you just want to get to know more about it or if you are a devotee yourself, you can rest assured that you can satisfy your taste buds at the Angel, CAMRA's North Manchester Real Ale Pub of the Year for 2010.
