Frankie goes to New York....Street

Sometimes, all you want to do is get back to some good ole fashioned eatin’.

You know what I’m talking about here, living in a city where food crazes come in and out of fashion faster than you can say Cronut Milkshake, sometimes you can find yourself in abundance of new albeit slightly terrifying eating trends to experience with no idea where to start.

This is why, this week I let my “New Restaurants I Want to Try” List take 5, whilst I sank back into the comfort of a familiar favourite; The Grill on New York Street.

The Grill on New York Street’s space is warm and inviting, with an open kitchen allowing you to sit facing the action as you attempt to eyeball your dish as it’s prepared for the pass.

This particular occasion for which me and my fellow foodie friend were visiting, was for our quarterly steak and cake date of which we were extremely excited. Both putting in our orders of rare rump steaks with home cooked chips and root, seasonal vegetables – we felt satisfied making our usual order albeit slightly envious of the dishes holding crispy calamari and torched mackerel which adorned the table close by.

Our steaks arrived plump, juicy and cooked wonderfully rare. The outside had that wonderful flame-infused flavour which complimented the warm soft centre. Chewy, but not too chewy, each bite fell apart in the mouth as the broiled and salty taste melts onto the tongue.

The vegetables were a little lack lustre, pale in colour but still retained the delicious crunch of a well roasted veggie. Whenever I encounter a substantial portion of heritage greens, it provides me with further proof that should you ever feel inclined to try and go for the healthier option – don’t. Stick with the chips, or more accurately; the chunky, skin-on, fluffy-centred chippy chips...sigh.

As steaks go, this particular plateful somewhat satisfied the steak-shaped hole I was missing in my stomach, however I feel for its £18.50 price tag I would like to see a little more bang for my buck in the future (perhaps in a jug-shape vessel of complimentary béarnaise?)

We finished our mains with substantial room for dessert and ordered the usual suspects from the quintessentially British-pud line-up.

Handsome plates of Sticky Toffee Pudding and Chocolate Fudge Cake arrived, I think my co-diner must have got the dregs of the last slice of fudge cake as the topping as ever so slightly worn away, leaving a naked sponge topping where the glaze used to be. This slight superficial error however made no difference to the gooey decadence that is always a chocolate fudge cake.

The Sticky Toffee Pudding was soft and fluffy, with accompanying gloops of a deep, rich butterscotch sauce I could have drank by the jug-ful; a classic pud, the sweetness was drenched with cooling flavours of vanilla.

My only wish was that it could have been served a little warmer; I love my Sticky Toffee dessert to be piping hot so the treacle and flavours become even more decadent, however when served lukewarm the dessert quickly becomes very cold when paired with ice cream.

After having a hearty browse of the menu, I feel the next time I dine at Grill on New York Street I’ll confidently take a step out of my usual routine of steak and dine on one of their more adventurous dishes. With an array of tantalising starters and offerings of contemporary takes on classic dining which fill up the mains portion of the menu, it seems almost a shame to order something as simple as a steak when the menu offers up a plentiful feast.

So if you’re looking for some no-nonsense food in flattering lighting, The Grill on New York Street will most definitely fit the bill. Delivering its service similarly to its counter-part restaurants, I definitely feel my palette has been cleansed ready to take on the next cereal-topped-doughnut-flavoured-pulled-pork-burger craze that Manchester offers up to me on a plate.

VERDICT: 3/5 A classic fail-safe but slightly lacking it's usual charm.
