About Blue Bell Inn

he Blue Bell Inn is located in the delightful hamlet of Spen Green, Smallwood. The earliest reference to Smallwood appears in the Tabley family manuscripts dated 1209 as Smelewode. In 1443 a plea connects it with the nearby village of Astbury, and in 1585 it appears that there was a building on the Blue Bell site. In 1727 The Blue Bell was a farmstead & alehouse, and it was owned by William Timmis Esq. The first tenant was charged at £1.19s.10d per annum. The Bell remained a leased & tenanted property until 2009 when it became a freehold property. It only took 182 years to revert back to William Timmis Esq.'s day!!!!! We hope you enjoy your time here, if you do, tell others. If not please tell us.
