Loyal patrons joined the Mooney family, management of The Belle Epoque and local VIP and celebrity guests to mark the special occasion, which also saw Director Matthew Mooney presented with an award for the achievement.
Following a champagne reception, guests were treated to a three course lunch characteristically prepared using locally sourced ingredients to the highest standard. Head Chef Gareth Chappell presented guests with a Foie Gras Creme Brulee with Chicken Liver Parfait and Pruneaux described by guests as ‘extremely clever and delicious’. The main course consisted of Pan Fried Hake, served with Spring vegetables, Asparagus Salad and Edible Flowers.
In true celebratory style, the Classic French Chocolate Truffle Cake came with Edible Gold, Ginger & Mint Anglaise on a plate iced with the words ’40 Ans – Bon Anniversaire’. Cheese Petit Four & Blowers Rhone was followed by coffee.
Cricket commentator Henry Blofeld, a staunt supporter of the Cheshire venue, paid tribute and recalled numerous entertaining stories of yesteryear, rekindling his fond memories of this wonderful restaurant. Neil and Christine Hamilton may not have been present in person, but the pair sent a special message to be read out at the lunch, acknowledging ‘The Belle Epoque has been incredibly special to us over the years, and the Mooney family so hospitable. The Belle Epoque has a special place in our hearts’.
At the end of what was a truly superb afternoon of socialising and fine food, Henry Blofeld presented Matthew Mooney with a sculpture befitting the opulent surroundings, marking an incredible four decades of dining excellence.
Speaking after the lunch, Matthew Mooney commented ‘This afternoon has been a remarkable reminder of the loyal support we have enjoyed in the past, and even more humbling, the support we continue to enjoy now and in to the future. The kind words expressed by so many, really do make all the hard work of myself and the management so worthwhile’.
Operations Director Richard Walker also expressed his thoughts on the afternoon. ‘I am delighted that so many people have been able to enjoy a relaxed lunch with us this Friday afternoon, recognising and celebrating the achievements of this great restaurant. Hearing the hugely positive comments and memories from today’s guests, makes me proud to be involved with such an iconic venue’.
The venue will now ramp up acknowledgement and celebration if its 40th year, with plans for a large celebratory event in the autumn.
