General manager Matthew Abbott managed the award-winning John Millington pub at Cheadle Hulme for Hydes before moving to the Coach & Four to spearhead its refurbishment. He’s been in the business for 19 years, after getting a taste for it at his grandparents’ tenancy.
He also ran bars for the Barracuda Group for 12 years.
The Hydes multizoned managed-house now boasts a 60-cover restaurant set in an orangery and, as part of a £650,000 refurbishment, the former carvery has been transformed into a fresh food operation. Upstairs there’s a function room, which is used for wedding parties and sporting events, while at the rear is accommodation at the Wilmslow Lodge.
Matthew has played a key role in the development of the business by project managing the refurbishment, using the template from the John Millington. An online booking system, the use of social media, the creation of databases and websites has further boosted business.
Matthew says: “The pub was lacking in community spirit before we put it back on the map by repositioning the business but retaining its history. Now we see all sorts from local drinkers, lunchtime diners, family birthdays and locals watching the match."
