3rd best hot dog of all time

Last night it was the 5th best, but much like a life changing experience, the more you ponder about it afterwards, the more impressed you become. I have now had 12 hours to reflect on it and am very pleased to say that it was the 3rd best hot dog of all time.

I won’t bore you with details on the other two. I was young, overseas and didn't have a care in the world. I had been on the hot dog hunt for many moons and I had frankly retired from the hot dog world, which is why this one slapped me around the face like a wet floundering fish.

Yes people, this was at Dogs N’ Dough which is quickly becoming a favourite bar/diner of mine.

The hot dog of choice was the colonel dog and consisted of a beef frank topped with fried chicken, coleslaw (refuse to call it slaw) and BBQ sauce.

Now it may not sound as amazing as I describe to you, but BELIEVE me....it was as if Colonel Sanders had given me a big kiss (with hot dog in his mouth).

You start off with the crunch of the homemade radish/cabbage/mayo coleslaw then the succulent southern fried style chicken nuggets with the softest hint of spice and then WHAMO - the sweet BBQ sauce. Up to here most would be happy, I was. It is after all the description of a damn good chicken sandwich.

But then, then you get the snap of the beef sausage all within a brioche pillow. Honestly, I want another now and it’s only 1030 in the morning.

A lot of the American style restaurants which have sprug up quicker than a Texas oil refinery lack the one thing America is known for – first class polite service. Luckily Dogs N’ Dough have nailed this element of the dining experience. Friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, quick and in our case American too!

The drinks menu is vast and inventive, your average Mexican would be happy with the range of chilli sauces available, the pizzas are brilliant and sides ideal. Nothing too outrageous, just simple cheese and frank slices on fries. It’s enough without taking on the beautiful hot dog.

If the sun is out head down to their new Dog Shack in Spinningfields. If the sun is not out, head to Bow Lane and tell em Mel sent you.
