Malaysian Street Food in Altrincham

Whilst doing my shopping in Altrincham yesterday I found myself floating over to the Market Quarter like those kids did in the old Bisto advert – the smell of good food hung in the air and I had to find who was responsible.

Having failed to find the origins of this spicy aroma in the food hall, I ventured to the atmospheric live music/street food area and soon realised that the smell was coming from a rather long queue for NasiLemak. These guys already have a very good outlet within Fallowfield’s Friendship Inn and having eaten there earlier this year I knew I was in for a treat.

The menu consists of their most popular dishes and those which are easy to eat on the go. The likes of the Chicken Satay Skewers and Thai Fish Cakes are perfect examples of truly authentic street food snacks.

The strong almost sweet satay sauce is a perfect combination for the tender chicken, whilst the fish cakes had a tremendous depth of flavour – I counted so many different ingredients and found it staggering to find they confidently balance them with perfection.

Once I had polished those off I tucked into some cod which had been barbecued on a banana leaf to prevent it sticking and was again cooked faultlessly. This was accompanied with a fragrant glass noodle salad which had a sour lime tang, spicy red chillies and a salty crunch from dry roasted nuts. This was healthy fast food, cooked to restaurant standards – much better than any other hot street food vendor I’ve had recently.

Finally I had to try my favourite dish from last time – the Beef Rendang. This creamy, caramel-like spicy dish was served with beautiful steamed rice and was an absolute joy to eat. I think that combining fresh coconut shavings with good quality slow cooked beef is a winning combo. I really want this recipe.

NasiLemak are at Altrincham’s Twilight Markets at the moment, so go check them out. They even have a free event on this coming Saturday – more information here.
